Acibadem: Turkey’s Rising Star

AcibademI am in Istanbul, Turkey visiting Turkey’s leading private hospital group, Acibadem. Along the way have run into a group of doctors visiting from the Medical Society of Washington DC, and a delegation from Texas that includes a state legislator, and an executive with the Baylor Medical system.

It’s a small world.

The economy is booming in Turkey and you can feel it. The airport is busy, the roads are packed and the stores are teeming with shoppers.  On CNN its doom and gloom, but outside my hotel its boom boom boom. Turkey’s economy in the first quarter of 2011grew at more than 11% — faster than China.  Pedal to the metal.

Acibadem is a rising star in Turkey. In just 10 years, the hospital has grown from a couple of outpatient clinics to the premier healthcare brand in Turkey.  Acibadem hospitals now treats over 2 million patients annually, and attracts patients from Russia, Germany and the Balkans.

I’ve just visited two of Acibadem’s newest hospitals, Maslak and Fulya. Acibadem Maslak is Acibadem’s flagship hospital and incorporates high end design and technology.  The group from Texas is ooohing and ahhhing as they tour the hospital.  The doctors from the US are more reserved but no less impressed.

The Fulya hospital is the newest hospital in the group and focuses on orthopedics and sports medicine.  Acibadem is a big player in sports and sports medicine. Acibadem sponsors some of of Europe’s top soccer and volleyball teams, and is also the medical partner of other top teams, like Belgrade Red Star. The Fulya hospital will soon be one of only three FIFA accredited medical centers.  Like I said, Acibadem is a big player in this arena.

I had the opportunity to talk with the head of orthopedic surgery at Fulya hospital, and he showed me the hospital’s new state-of-the-art rehabilitation center, which features Turkish doctors, equipment from Finland and massage therapists from Thailand. High tech meets high touch.

The doctors I have met here at Acibadem are leaders in robotic surgery, high end diagnostics, neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. They, like the city of Istanbul, are dynamic, international and at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Definitely worth checking out.
